When buying a wedding ring?

Published by melissa under Diamond Rings

Does it really matter the quality of the diamonds in it?

I found a ring at SamsClub that is perfect for me. I absolutely love it.

I don’t have high standards, it doesnt have to be this huge rock or anything but its affordable ($323.00) and i just love the ring. I know its less than 1 carat in diamonds. .72 or something like that, i cant remember the exact #.

But the reason why i ask is because I want it to last. Of course right, i mean ill be wearing it hopefully forever lol.

Its a square ring with 9 small diamonds in the center in an invisible setting so it looks like one fairly good sized diamond. Then it has little diamonds around it and a little bit on the band on either side of the main center piece. Its 14k white gold.

So like i said, im not a girl with high standards, i dont have to have the best of the best with top notch this and that. :) I just want it to last and to look like how it did when he first bought it for me. I don’t want the gold to get discolored and the diamonds to look crappy later on in 20, 30, 40 years from now.
Im sure you all understand.

So let me know what you think, and I’d appreciate any advice on what to look for when i’m lookin with my fiance for our wedding rings. :) (like the minimum quality gold, or diamond or settings i should get.)

Thank you in advance!

there is a link to a pendant that looks similar to the ring. I couldn’t find the ring online. :-(
But, its something to sort of give you an idea of what i was trying to describe in the ring.
your probably right Nikki lol it could be smaller than that… i was just guessing haha

Oh the size only matters if it matters to you. ANY diamond will last, big or small, and any gold is gold so it’ll be fine for colour. Go with what you life! Now if it’s .72 it must be more than $300 because I know I looked at one that was .25 and it was $250. If it is the real price and a real diamond then the clarity and colour must be complete crap! I’d ask them what the Colour and clarity are on it.
    good luck

EDIT: the gold is fine. My grandma’s engagement ring was 14k gold and 50 years later it hasn’t changed a single bit. Still gorgeous. It’s not the gold you want to look at it’s the diamond (which will also last, but at that price, if that’s the size I don’t believe its a real diamond) just a little “too good to be true” even for Sam’s Club! lol

EDIT2: I looked at your link. Okay so for .29 carat that’s not insanely cheap. (I mean it’s cheap but not so cheap I’d think it was fake) it does have a good H-I rating. I’d say go for it then! very nice!

If you love it, it’s the ring for you! I wouldn’t worry too much about the rating of the stones as long as you don’t see feathers or spots in them with the naked eye and the tint or color of the stone pleases you, the ring will do nicely.

The diamonds will look the same way generations from now. You pay for the clarity, cut size of the diamond. That’s what the quality is. It doesn’t change over time. I would suggest 18k gold though. You might have issues with the gold long before the diamond.

Congratulations! To him also, for finding a girl like you.

EDIT: After reading one of the other answers it got me thinking. .72 for less than $400 is not right. I bought mine 14 years ago. It was 1.02k and it was over $3000. Make sure that’s not the price for just the setting without the diamond. Or that it’s not a Cubic Zorconia. Something just isn’t making sense.

Diamonds from WalMart/Sams Club aren’t generally very good quality, aren’t matched well, and certainly aren’t set securely. You can do much better for the money. Try looking at overstock.com (still fairly low priced, but they have some decent quality rings) or even at eBay.

no the quality doesn’t matter unless you plan on looking at it under a microscope. normally diamonds that have ‘flaws’ aren’t visible by the naked eye!
i think it’s great that you found one at a reasonable price! i’m sure its beautiful!!

Blue Nile, an Internet company, offers very complete information about the diamond jewelry it sells. Look them up!

The clarity of a diamond is important for a couple of reasons. If the carbon flakes, feathery places, and other inclusions are too numerous or prominent, the diamond will not sparkle like it should. Also, a diamond with flaws near the edge may be weaker, and it’s not unheard of for such a stone to chip or crack.

If you see “t.w.” in the description, it means “total weight”. For the price you mention, it sounds like the .72 refers to the total carat weight of all the diamonds in the ring. Little diamonds are comparatively less expensive than large ones. If the .72 carats were all in one central diamond, it would be much more expensive.

Regular Wal*Mart stores sell diamonds too. Also you can check around in real jewelry stores. There’s no need to be in too much of a hurry.

the diamonds will be fine, the gold will be fine. the rhodium wears off, and then the white gold alloy shows through. Sam’s club jewelry is high quality.

you say you want it to last and look like it did when he first bought it. that is an unreasonable expectation. your ring will get scratched, bashed, beat up, banged up, and dirty. the rhodium coating will wear off.

i am more concerned with the invisible setting. how durable is it? will it last?

The quality will be the same as everywhere else – they just are able to buy in such huge quantities that their prices are low.

Just be sure if it’s white gold that it isn’t the kind that is dipped in rhodium. Those have to be re-dipped every few years. Real white gold stays bright and shiny foreverl I have a plain white gold ring that is 53 years old, and it looks as good as it did when it was new.
